Series of Public Hikes Announced!
Joe Bonnette, President of the Partners of the Joyce Kilmer Slickrock Wilderness announced a series of hikes open to the public for 2014. These hikes vary in length and difficulty, and we recommend contacting the hIke leader or emailing "firstname.lastname@example.org" for full information.
*MARCH 20, Changed Location and Time! We will hike the newly cleared Yellow Creek Mountain Trail after the GREAT Meeting. Meet at 2 PM at the Trail Crossing on Old Field Gap, and we will hike the 1.8 mile, mostly downhill, trail to Route 129. Led by Jill Gottesman & Dick Evans. MARCH 29: Waterfall Hikes. Hike to Yellow Creek Falls and Burgin Creek Falls. Two hikes approximately 2 miles total. Difficult walking. Led by Marshall McClung, Joe Bonnette, & Hoot Gibbs. APRIL 15: Watch the Lunar Full Moon Eclipse from the top of Huckleberry Knob, highest point in Graham County. Easy 2.5 mile round trip starting from the Huckleberry Knob Parking Lot/Trailhead at 5 PM. Bring your evening meal, flashlights, and warm clothes. Return time near Midnight. *APRIL 16: Joyce Kilmer Loop Trail. 2 miles, easy to moderate difficulty, led by Dick Evans & Kim Hainge. Meet at Cheoah Ranger Station on Massey Branch Rd. @ 11:30 pm. following Partners of JK bi-monthly meeting on Wednesday 4/16 to car pool. Special spring wildflower walk. Max. group size 10. *APRIL 18 - 20: Easter BackPack Traverse of Joyce Kilmer Slickrock Wilderness. Three day, two night trip through one of the most remote and wild areas in the Southeast. 20 mile strenuous hike involves ridge hiking, stream crossings, steep trails, indistinct routes, everything an experienced backpacker wants on a hike. Possibility of seeing Easter Sunrise from the top on Hangover. Group size limitation (10), so you must contact hike leader Dick Evans at (828) 479-2503 for required reservations.
*MAY 10 : Sassafras Falls and back via Big Snowbird Trail. 7+ miles, long moderate difficulty, led by Rick Davis. Meet Saturday, May 10 @ 10 am. at the Cheoah Ranger Station on Massey Branch Road.
